Substance Use

jodyandrews, January 25, 2025January 25, 2025

It’s not the substance that hooks you, it’s the emotions…There is a
crack somewhere in our spirits, and we have to heal that before
anything. ―Antonio Michael Downing

If things feel crazy and you can not put your finger on it, look
for addiction. I describe it as something someone will do to relieve their craving, such as go out in the middle of the night in a snowstorm wearing fuzzy slippers to obtain. This includes alcohol, drugs, smokes, sex, gambling, food, porn or pot. Serious substance abuse is often the underlying cause for many relationship issues as well as toxic behaviors. Until addressed, we will remain stuck. Substance abuse issues are difficult to extricate from. A person with addiction will get help when they are ready, and if they are not ready, they will not. If you are in a relationship with a substance abuser, your job is to take care of yourself. Find an Al Anon or Narcotics Anonymous or other support group. Understand the concepts of enabling and co-dependency. Your options for any solution are still the three basics: do
nothing, communicate, or leave.
