Be careful…not all are what they seem, some people pretend to be the beach but
they’re actually quicksand. –Steve Maraboli
We get stuck. We go round and round in a difficult, dysfunctional relationship unable to break free and we ask ourselves how did I get here? In this section we will learn to identify those situations that keep us stuck. Some might be identified as toxic, but keep in mind toxic is not the same for everyone. Kryptonite, peanuts or gluten anyone? While there are a few clearly toxic situations such as domestic violence or sex abuse, I hesitate to overuse the word. Also, I suggest caution when casually labeling someone with a personality disorder. Their behavior may be more a learned way of being in the world. For example, using “narcissistic” to describe what is annoyingly self-centered. One you can live with, the other you probably should not. Same for flag colors. What is a red flag for one person may be yellow, or even green for another.
