Gaslighting

jodyandrews, August 17, 2024August 17, 2024

Do not adjust your mind – the fault is in reality.  –R.D. Laing

The term “gaslighting” comes from a 1940’s movie where the sociopath husband makes his wife think she is crazy by randomly adjusting the lighting, hiding things and deliberately making her question her reality. Gaslighting is not the same as lying. It’s an insidious form of manipulation and control that is often used by narcissists, sociopaths and addictsor substance abusers. Victims are systematically and deliberately fed false information that leads them to question what they know to be true, even about themselves. Down becomes up and up becomes down. Ultimately, they end up questioning their memory, their reality, and even their sanity. When you start to think you are crazy, look for gaslighting.
